Horrible Book Cover

“I really wanted to like this book, in part because I like to encourage Canadian authors.

But first off I have to say – that book cover is absolutely horrible! Now moving on to the actual book.

This book was a massive amount of information, presented in transcript form and representing miscellaneous conversations had over the years. It was confusing and I kept having to go back and forth to try to figure out which person was speaking when and the presentation on the page was not “user friendly” at all.

I did think some of the actual book content, when I could read it clearly, was interesting but this book feels like one big jumble to me.”

Psycho-Analyzing Himself

“As you can tell by the table of contents in this book, “From Mayor To Fool: The Psyography Of A Middle Class Man” by Tom Mayeur it is a play. I found it difficult to read, it appears he is psycho-analyzing himself and questioning his whole self-being. The hardest part is keeping it straight and where he is at what time in his life. In the end it was unclear in what he wanted to do or where he wanted to go in the future. Maybe he felt the need to put it in words so he could help himself decide. Maybe you’ll enjoy this book if you’re into play writing.”

“I found From Mayor To Fool: The Psyography Of A Middle Class Man a difficult book to read. The book is a collection of transcripts from several conversations the author has with people in his life. The transcripts include his personal thoughts and experiences written in the format of a play. In his conversations, the author takes a close look at his life in an attempt to improve it. He examines the struggles in his life as a middle class man.

I applaud the author for putting his life into a story for everyone to read and critique.”

Interspersed Endless Ellipses

“I wanted to like “From Mayor To Fool.” I really did. I love personal narratives in which people explain their spiritual and emotional evolution. Stories about change can be deeply moving, and I can usually overlook a lot of challenging writing or formatting in these cases.

Sadly, I couldn’t get past the way “From Mayor to Fool” was written to enjoy the story. It is a series of short interludes written as a play. The characters and settings are never clear, and the writing is a interspersed with endless ellipses and questionable spellings. This felt much more like a very promising workshop piece that needed much more editing than a finished or accomplished autobiography.”

The World Shifted

“Finally got your book, I was so excited! And I’m about halfway through it.

Really cool idea to do it in a play format – I had not expected that. Did you transcribe the sessions? The guy who talked to your parents was hilarious. Your mum was so cute – she wanted to please him at the beginning but he was just so random and off! Haha, “I think Dad wants to leave.”

I just finished Act IV. I’m not sure how to…yeah. I cried through most of it! Words? Are not coming easily right now. It was pretty powerful, and it feels like the world has sort of shifted a bit. Do you know what I mean? Like when you see, hear, read, smell, etc., something that feels like it changes you? Or maybe not you, but the space around your head? Errrr…I’ve never been very good at explaining myself. Just…wow.”

Tim Mayeur:
Yes, I transcribed the sessions. I wanted to get it as close to word for word as possible. My mom taught grammar for 34 years, so she edited. The experience I went through in ACT IV is what changed me and opened up my mind. The Tarot Card Reader in the sessions with my parents is a woman and yes, she was quite random.
